Tinnitus can sometimes lead to secondary problems with well-being such as depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. It can become the focus for unwanted negative thoughts and can become overwhelming. Whilst there is no ‘cure’ for tinnitus, you do not have to just ‘learn to live with it’. There are several tinnitus treatment and management strategies that can be helpful. Sometimes a combination of tinnitus treatment options are most effective and, together, we can find a solution that works for you.
Sound Enrichment
People who have tinnitus often notice that it is more noticeable in a quiet environment, for example at night, and that listening to other sounds can make it less bothersome. Bedside / table top or in the ear sound generators can provide natural sounds, white noise or gentle music to help distract you from your tinnitus during these quiet times.
If your tinnitus is accompanied by any hearing loss, then correcting this loss with hearing aids is often very helpful for managing tinnitus. Most people find they hear their tinnitus less when their hearing aids are switched on.
“Combination devices” are hearing aids that can be set with additional masking noise delivered with the amplification, that can help to cover the tinnitus you hear and make it less noticeable.
Tinnitus Therapy
Techniques to change behaviour can help you manage the effect that tinnitus has on your life. It helps you understand your thought process in relation to the condition so that your thoughts can become more positive and can help you deal with anxiety and distress more effectively. This is usually delivered over a number of sessions, the number needed will depend on the severity of the symptoms and in agreement between the client and their clinician.
Relaxation
Relaxation techniques can help break down the vicious cycle of stress and anxiety that many people find accompanies their tinnitus. We can help you find self-care techniques that work for you.
We may also recommend sessions with other healthcare professionals for further advice and treatment if necessary and appropriate.
